Bjergsted

Bjergsted is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in West Zealand County on the west coast of the island of Zealand (Sj?lland) in Denmark. The municipality includes the islands of Sejr? and Neksel?, and covers an area of 138.62 km?. It has a total population of 8,047 (2005). Its mayor is Gert Larsen, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Sveb?lle.

Neighboring municipalities are Tornved, Svinninge, and Dragsholm to the east, Kalundborg and Hvideb?k to the west, and H?ng to the south. To the north is Sejr? Bay (Sejr? Bugt), the bay in which the islands of Sejr? and Neksel? are located. The municipality of Trundholm on the other side of Sejr? Bay is Bjergsted's municipal neighbor to the north, on account of the long spit of land known as Zealand's Point (Sj?llands Odde), that sticks out into the Great Belt (Storeb?lt), the strait which separates Zealand from the island of Funen.

Ferry service at the town of Havns? connects the municipality to the islands of Sejr? and Neksel?.

By January 1, 2007 Bjergsted municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing G?rlev, Hvideb?k, H?ng, and Kalundborg municipalities to form a new Kalundborg municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 598 km? and a total population of 48,697 (2005).
