The office was created at the separation of the Church in Wales from the established Church of England in 1921 when the first bishop was appointed. The current Bishop is the Right Reverend Dominic Walker, OGS, the 9th Bishop of Monmouth, who was previously Area Bishop of Reading in the Church of England. His predecessor, Rt Rev Rowan Williams, was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in 2002 - the first Welsh bishop to hold that post since the English Reformation in the sixteenth century.
