Bishop James Madison Society
The Bishop James Madison Society is a secret society of the College of William and Mary in Virginia. The Society was founded in the year 1812 at the College as a tribute to the life of the late Bishop James Madison, eighth president of William and Mary. (John Tyler and James Madison are among past members.) Interest in the society waned, and when the college collapsed during the 1880s, the absence of any students also spelled the end of student clubs.

Later students revived the society, and it continues today. Membership in the society is exclusive and confidential and honors those most dedicated and vibrant members of the student body. During Commencement members are identified through the medals they wear.
