The Birmingham Black Barons was a professional baseball team based out of Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama which played in the Negro Leagues. The Barons were organized in 1920 and entered into the Negro Southern League. in 1923, they became an associate member of the Negro National League. But, because of finances, they returned in 1926 to the Negro Southern League. In 1927, the team was once again part of the Negro National League due to better play than in the past. The team won the second half pennant with the help of pitcher, Satchel Paige. They lost the Negro National League title to the Chicago American Giants in four straight games.

The economy during the Great Depression forced the Barons to return to the Southern League in 1931. They managed to return to the National League, but only for one season as poor play caused them to return to the Southern League one more time. By 1940 they had improved enough to return to the Northern League and managed to stay there throughtout the remainder of their history. The Barons became an official member of the Negro National League in 1945.

From 1943 to 1948, the Barons would meet the Homestead Grays in three Negro League World Series, losing all three match-ups and setting the stage for a rivalry that lasted until the Homestead Grays folded in 1950.

In 1956 the Barons joined three other teams to form the Negro American League, but because of low attendance, the league did not last. The process of integration in baseball was slow in the south, but steady. More and more black players went into the integrated leagues. The Black Barons played their last game in 1960.
