Binomen


 
 

In zoology, a binomen, or binominal name, is the name of a species.

A binomen is a name consisting of two names: generic name and specific name. Both names are typeset in italics, but only the generic name is capitalised.

If the generic name has already been mentioned in the same paragraph, it is often abbreviated to the initial letter in subsequent uses (C. lupus).

In a scientific publication, a name is incomplete without an author citation and publication details. This indicates who published the name; in what publication; with the date of the publication.

Generic name: In biological nomenclature, a generic name or "the name of a genus" (sometimes "genus name") is the name of a genus. In any scientific name to consist of more than one part, the name of the genus will be the first part....

Specific name: In zoological nomenclature, a specific name is the second part (second name) in the name of a species (a binomen). The first part is the name of the genus....
