Bijelo Polje


 

Bijelo Polje is major town in the northern part of Montenegro. It has a population of over 32,000 (over 75,000 in area) which makes it third largest in Montenegro,after Podgorica and Nik?i?. Population is mixed, with 55% of Ortodox and 45% of Muslims.

Bijelo Polje was within the Ottoman Empire till its liberation by Montenegrin forces in Balkan Wars (1912). While it was Turkish town it was called Akovo.

The most famous building in Bijelo Polje is medieval crkva Svetog Petra (St.Peter's Church).

Many well known writers were born in or around Bijelo Polje,including ?amil Sijari?, Miodrag Bulatovi? and Risto Ratkovi?, who wrote the first Montenegrin novel "Nevidjbog" that takes place in Bijelo Polje.
