Bicester group


 

In the 1960s and 1970s Bicester had, as did many British towns, a flourishing collection of amateur and semi-professional rock bands or "Groups" as they were known at the time.

  • "Georgie and the Rave Ons"
  • The "Shindigs"
  • The "Apollos"
  • The "Tsunamis" were formed by Brian Nelson (rhythm guitar), Dave Kirk (bass guitar and Derek Gebbels (lead guitar) with Paul Ayres (drums) and Tony Jackson (vocals) joining later. Having initially established themselves the band then changed their name to the Methods.
  • The "Methods" comprised Derek Gebbels (lead guitar), Brian Nelson (rhythm guitar), Dave Kirk (bass guitar) Paul Ayres (drums) with Keith Naylor replacing Tony Jackson on vocals. Keith Naylor later left the group and George Adams (vocals) and Stuart Forest (keyboard) from the Shindigs joined the band which was then renamed Adrian's People.
  • "Adrian's People" were named after Adrian Breacker the groups manager who was also the manager of the Courtyard and the Nowhere Club in Bicester where the group practised and often performed. As well as becoming well established around Oxfordshire the group also travelled to many gigs in the surrounding counties. Stuart Forest left to join another band and was replaced on keyboards by Barney Glasgow. Later Derek Gebbels also left and George Adams moved on and to be replaced by Roger Phipps.
  • "Central Park No. Five", later known as "Central Park" featured Adam Banks (guitar), Paul Jobling (drums), Eddy Sanders (lead guitar) and Brian Inglis (bass guitar).
  • "Parish" were formed from the remnants of Adrian's People and consisted of Roger Phipps (vocals), Barney Glasgow (keyboards), Dave Kirk (bass guitar), Rick Witazynski (lead guitar) and Paul Ayres (drums)
  • "Silk Impression" were originally known as "One Way System" and the founding members were Bob Bosher(lead vocals),Roy Pankhurst(bass guitar and backing vocals),Dave Pearce (lead guitar),Steve Winman (rhythm guitar and backing vocals) and Will Stockley (drums). Initially formed in 1968 they became Silk Impression when Dave Pearce left in 1969 and Graham Timms joined on bass guitar with Roy Pankhurst moving to keyboards. The group finally split in 1971 when Bob Bosher and Roy Pankhurst joined Paul Ayres, Barney Glasgow and Dave Kirk from "Adrians People" and "Parish" and Derek Gebbels who had been a member of "Adrian's People".
  • "Winter's Tale" were formed in 1971 and at first featured Paul Ayres (drums), Derek Gebbels (lead guitar), Barney Glasgow (keyboard), Bob Bosher (lead vocals) Roy Pankhurst (rhythm guitar) and Dave Kirk (bass guitar). Derek and Dave subsequently left shortly after formation and Brian Inglis from "Central Park No 5" joined on bass guitar. In 1974 the band appeared on New Faces. The following year Barney Glasgow left and was replaced by Ian Smith on lead guitar. In 1976 the band recorded an EP at Acorn studios. The band finally split up in 1977 whilst they were still ahead of the game!
