Beverly Hills Cop III

Beverly Hills Cop III is a 1994 Eddie Murphy motion picture that was directed by John Landis, who had previously worked with Murphy on Trading Places and Coming to America. It was released on Wednesday, May 25 of that year, grossed a disappointing $44 million in the US and is the final chapter in the Beverly Hills Cop trilogy. Judge Reinhold reprises his role as Det. William Rosewood.

Critical reaction

This was the least popular of the trilogy movies, some believe it was because of the lack of John Ashton, Ronny Cox, and Paul Reiser characters (Taggart, Bogomil, and Friedman respectively). Although Bronson Pinchot would reprise his scene stealing role from the first film. In addition to the absence of Ashton and Cox (and Reiser to a much lesser extent), are the absence of producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer.

Audiences also believed that Beverly Hills Cop III suffered because it came across as more of a by-the-numbers action movie than a deft mix of action and edgy comedy like the first two. It has often been suggested that the premise of Axel Foley once again traveling to Beverly Hills to avenge a brutal attack on one of his friends was starting to wear thin by the third movie. Other frequent criticisms of Beverly Hills Cop III was the main theme Axel F being poorly remixed (Nile Rodgers composed the score as opposed to Harold Faltermeyer), Eddie Murphy's presumably uninspired performance, and a considerably pointless subplot involving Murphy and love interest Theresa Randle.

Even though Harold Faltermeyer did not return to scoring duties on Beverly Hills Cop III, his song co-producer from the previous franchise entries, Keith Forsey, did produce and co-write a new song. "Keep The Peace", performed by INXS was suppose to be in the vein of previous Faltermeyer/Forsey Beverly Hills Cop techno-pop stadium anthems such as "The Heat Is On" (performed by Glenn Frey) and "Shakedown" (performed by Bob Seger).
