Beverly Crusher

Beverly Crusher, a character in the Star Trek fictional universe, was the Chief Medical Officer onboard the USS Enterprise-D and held the rank of commander; upon the destruction of that ship, she has continued in that post and rank on the USS Enterprise-E. This character first appeared in the science fiction television series ' and later appeared in movies based upon this series. She was played by the actress Gates McFadden.

Beverly Howard was born in 2324 to Paul and Isabel Howard in Copernicus City, Luna. Her mother died while Beverly was young, and she grew up with her grandmother on the Arvada III colony. She married Jack Crusher in 2348 and gave birth to his son Wesley Crusher the following year. (Jack Crusher proposed to Beverly Howard by giving her a book called How to Advance Your Career Through Marriage as a gag gift.)

Beverly's husband died on an away mission in 2354, and it took her a long time to recover. There has always been a hint of some kind of attraction between her and Jean-Luc Picard, but the two never brought it up until it was forced into the open by a device implanted in the two by an alien species that allowed them to read each other's thoughts in the episode "Attached". In one of Q's timelines in the final episode All Good Things..., she had married and divorced Picard and been promoted to Captain of a medical ship. She kept his name, so both of them once answered "yes" to someone asking for "Captain Picard".

In 2365, Dr. Crusher left the Enterprise-D in order to become the head of Starfleet Medical, being replaced on the Enterprise by Dr. Katherine Pulaski. A year later, Dr. Crusher returned to the Enterprise, and Pulaski left.

Like the other female main characters, Beverly Crusher struggled for air time and her character was some what undeveloped by the end of TNG's run. Crusher was hardly featured in any of the TNG movies, something that many Crusher fans have openly complained about.

Beverly is a prominent character in Michael Jan Friedman's recent Trek novel Death In Winter. She is presumed lost during an away mission, but survives and chooses to return to duty on the Enterprise. Most notably, she and Picard decide to pursue a romantic as well as professional relationship.
