She is most noted for her roles as Iris Cory on Another World (1972-1980) and its spinoff Texas, (1980-1981) as well as Alexandra Spaulding on Guiding Light (1984-1992). McKinsey's exit from Guiding Light proved to be quite dramatic in its own right: leaving on a planned six-week vacation, McKinsey informed Procter & Gamble that she did not intend to return to the show. She had had an "out clause" meaning she could quit the show by giving six weeks notice, a clause that even executive producer Jill Farren Phelps was unaware of.

She was the first star on daytime television to be given star billing in a soap opera (Texas) -- the first star to get special billing was Rosemary Prinz, who was billed as a "special guest star" during the first year of All My Children. Her name appeared in the opening credits of the show, which was a spinoff of Another World and featured her character Iris.
