Bernkastel-Kues is very famous for its wines and the old market square. The square is surrounded by many well preserved half-timbered houses. In the first week of September there is always a big wine festival with a display of fireworks and a festive procession. The famous Christmas-Markt (Christmas Market) is especially nice. Many local vendors sell everything from hotwine, called gluwein (pronounced gloo-vine), to handmade trinkets. The main industries in Bernkastel-Kues are viticulture and tourism.
