Bernard Lonergan
Bernard Lonergan, S.J. (1904 - 1984) was a Canadian Thomist philosopher, Jesuit theologian, and economist from Buckingham, Quebec who taught at Loyola College (Montreal), the University of Toronto, the Pontifical Gregorian University and Boston College. He is the author of Insight: A Study of Human Understanding (1957) and Method in Theology (1973), which established what he called the Generalized Empirical Method (GEM). John Angus Campbell has characterized Lonergan's generalized empirical method as his rhetoric, which is not only an intelligent, reasonable, responsible characterization, but also an astute observation, for it calls attention to the potential importance of Lonergan's method not only for philosophy and theology, but also for all other academic fields as well.
