In 2001, CBS had a major falling out with Goldberg, described in his book '. One of his main targets was Dan Rather. Goldberg followed Bias by the sequel '.

Goldberg believes that there is a liberal bias which is often not conscious. Rather, he claims that these views are so entrenched into people's thinking in these circles, and they so rarely encounter contrary views among their peers, that they think they are "normal", i.e. are blind to their own biases. Many of his critics argue that this is similar to how conservatives whom he supports often view the world and that therefore he is ignoring certain biases in his own political camp.

Goldberg has also been criticized by many for not properly documenting his sources and often for taking information out of context, including misrepresenting a quote from Michael Moore in his latest book. Al Franken devotes an entire chapter in one of his books to factual inaccuracies in Bias and included Bernard Goldberg's defense of these. Many people see Bernard Goldberg's attacks on the unsubstantiated "liberal bias" of CBS to be in retaliation after leaving the network.
