Bernard Fitzalan-Howard, 16th Duke of Norfolk
The Most Noble Bernard Marmaduke Fitzalan-Howard, 16th Duke of Norfolk (30 May 1908–31 January 1975), known as Earl of Arundel and Surrey before 1917, was the eldest surviving son of the 15th Duke of Norfolk, who died when the then Lord Arundel was only 9 years old. His mother was the suo jure 12th Lady Herries of Terregles, and he inherited her peerage on her death in 1947. He was educated at the Oratory School.

He married The Hon. Lavinia Mary Strutt, daughter of the 3rd Baron Belper, in 1937.

The Duke had no male issue, his children being:

- The Lady Anne Elizabeth Fitzalan-Howard, later suo jure 14th Lady Herries of Terregles (born 12 June 1938), married Colin Cowdrey, later Baron Cowdrey of Tonbridge
- The Lady Mary Katherine Fitzalan-Howard (born 14 August 1940), married Group Captain Anthony Mumford
- The Lady Sarah Margaret Fitzalan-Howard (born 28 September 1941), married Nigel Clutton
- The Lady Theresa Jane Fitzalan-Howard (born 24 June 1945), married Michael Kerr, 13th Marquess of Lothian
On his death the Dukedom passed to his cousin Miles Fitzalan-Howard, 12th Baron Beaumont and 4th Baron Howard of Glossop. The Lordship of Herries of Terregles, being an old Scottish peerage, was inherited by his eldest daughter, Lady Anne, who married the English cricketer Colin Cowdrey, who was later created a life peer as Baron Cowdrey of Tonbridge. His youngest daughter married the Earl of Ancram, at the time heir apparent to the 12th Marquess of Lothian and now 13th Marquess of Lothian, better known as the Conservative politician Michael Ancram.
