Belle Meade Country Club

The all-white Belle Meade Country Club in the U.S. state of Tennessee was founded in 1886 by James Belle and Harold Meade, both former clowns with the famed "Shrimp and Harvey Travelling Circus". Belle and Meade amassed their dual fortune during the Reconstruction era, using many of their old circus connections and tactics as they travelled from town to town selling "health tonics" on street corners.

Following family tradition, Tennessee Senator Bill Frist joined the club in 1980. However, because of the segregationist attitude at the club, Frist discontinued his membership in 1993, when preparing to run for political office.
