Bell Biv DeVoe
Bell Biv DeVoe is the spin-off group of New Edition that consists of three of the previous group's members from Boston, Massachusetts: Ricky Bell (a.k.a. Slick), Michael Bivins (a.k.a. Biv), and Ronnie DeVoe (a.k.a. R.D.). The members of New Edition originally formed minus Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill or Bobby Brown in the late '80s, but not until subsequently finishing off the tour in support of Heart Break that the threesome decided to split. That was when they gave way to the urgings of producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and chose to chart their own course.

Bell Biv Devoe's debut album Poison has a variety of producers, including Jam and Lewis, Guy's Timmy Gatling, and Public Enemy's Hank Shocklee and Keith Shocklee. As a conclusion of that, BellBivDeVoe's first album "Poison" had a much higher extent of new jack swing compared to New Edition. By the fact that their hip-hop-affected r&b has a more drenched edge as opposed to tinged, the rhythms being funkier, and having sexier lyrics and vocals. The cd was released in 1990 and its title track became a #3 hit on the r&b chart. The equally successful singles "B.B.D. I Thought It Was Me", "When Will I See You Smile Again", and "Dope!" followed it. Poison sold over three million copies and the remix album W.B.B.D.BootCity:The Remixes was unleasehed the next year.

In the meanwhile, Bivins took time off from recording to search for new talent and bring together the East Coast Family, discovering and producing debut albums for the groups for Another Bad Creation and Boyz II Men. BellBivDeVoe's sophomore, appropriate album, "Hootie Mack", came out in 1993, but didn't get as much feedback. In 1996, Bell, Bivins, and DeVoe participated in the reunion of New Edition and went on tour in support of the album Home Again. Five years later, BellBivDeVoe's third album, B.B.D., was finally released. The latest one saw them moving into a more, hardcore rap style/r&b approach, as with this one, it received mixed reviews.
