Belgrade
Belgrade (Serbian, ???????, Beograd {{Audio|sr-Beograd.ogg|listen}}), is the capital of Serbia since 1404, Serbia and Montenegro (2003–Present) and Yugoslavia (1918–2003). The city lies on the outfall of the Sava river to the Danube river in northern central Serbia, at 44.83° N 20.50° E. The population of the Belgrade region 1,711,800 (2002 census.)
Sports
- Together with Italian capital Rome, Belgrade hosted European Volleyball Championships from September 2 to September 11 2005.
- From September 15 to September 25 2005, Belgrade will host finals of European Basketball Championships. In addition, Serbian cities of Novi Sad and Vrsac, and Montenegrin capital Podgorica will host preliminary competitions.
- Belgrade will be the host city of the 2009 Summer Universiade.
