Beirut (, transliterated Bayrūt - the French name, Beyrouth, was also commonly used in English in the past) is the capital, largest city and chief seaport of Lebanon.

Beirut is the home of about 1.8 million people (2.1 million if the surrounding metropolitan areas are included), and is the commercial, banking and financial center of the region. The city is set to host the Winter Asian Games in 2011 and Jeux de la Francophonie (Francophone Games) in 2009.
