Bedtime story

Many parents, no matter where they live, tell a bedtime story to their children. Entertaining or instructive, and often extemporaneous, their purpose is to prepare the child for sleep. Typically, they are about the made-up creatures, e.g., talking animals, dragons, giants, etc.

It is not known why parents tend not to tell stories based on reality, e.g., a fictional twist to a news story. However, some children prefer such stories since they inform them about what is going on in the world around them. That said, it is important that such stories not be too frightening since that would not serve their purpose.
