One of the most well-known aspects of the series was the inclusion of the music videos, which occurred between animated segments. The duo would watch the videos and make humorous observations about them, or simply—particularly in the later seasons—engage in bizarre, nonsensical dialogue. Many artists were featured on the show, from the well known and popular to the alternative and more obscure. Even bands the duo seemingly liked were rarely spared from their cutting observations. They expressed grave disappointment with a video by AC/DC, despite acknowledging that they thought of themselves as fans of the group, and even though AC/DC is featured on Butt-head's ever-present T-shirt. Beavis and Butt-head expressed unalloyed enjoyment of a video only very rarely. Nirvana's Kurt Cobain is said to have been ecstatic at having the video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" praised by Beavis and Butt-head and deemed it a great compliment. White Zombie, Onyx and Pantera were also among the few groups for whom Beavis and Butt-head expressed whole-hearted appreciation, and the one group that earned their fondest reviews was Gwar. Beavis voiced his estimation that every video should be like Gwar's video.

Ironically, a disproportionate number of fans of the group Army of Lovers attest to having discovered the group from the appearance of a video of theirs on Beavis and Butt-head, in which both of the boys expressed frustration with the frequent shifts between scenes they deeply enjoyed and scenes they found disturbing.

Having the habit of denigrating the vast majority of videos, Beavis and Butt-head had to come up with especially severe reactions when confronted with videos that they found particularly awful. Butt-head reacted to a Michael Bolton video, as soon as he realized who it was, by announcing that he had soiled his pants. The ultimate put-down by the duo was to simply look at each other, each with a look of horror on his face, then switch the channel without saying a word. Only Vanilla Ice and Milli Vanilli were considered so egregious as to deserve this fate.
