~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Bathgate is home to the famous Cairnpapple Hill, a historic burial site: http://www.ancient-scotland.co.uk/site.php?a=36 Bathgate was the home of James Young Simpson. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ One of the town's major benefactors was John Newland, who emigrated to the West Indies where he became a rich planter. His benefaction allowed the establishment of Bathgate Academy which was founded in 1833.
