The Republic of Bashkortostan or Bashkiria (Bashkir: {{IPA|???????????? ????????????}}; {{lang-ru|??????????? ?????????????}} or {{lang-ru|?????????}}) is a federal subject of the Russian Federation (a republic). The direct transliteration of the republic's name in Russian is Respublika Bashkortostan or Bashkiriya, and the transliteration of the republic's name in Bashkir is Ba?qortostan Respublikahy. In Tatar the republic's name is Ba?qortostan Respublikas?.

Demographics

About a hundred nationalities inhabit Bashkortostan, including Russians (39%), Tatars (28%), Bashkirs (22%), Chuvash, Mari, Ukrainians, and Germans.
