At the 1992 Winter Olympics he won a gold medal on the Men's 10000 Meters. Before the 1994 Winter Olympics he was dissattified with the way to qualify for the tournaments that he became a Belgian. In Belgium there was (and still is) no speedskating tradition. So to qualify for the tournaments became no issue, because there were no other speedskaters to compete with. In Lillehammer (1994 Winter Olympics) Bart Veldkamp received a bronze medal on the Men's 10000 Meters for The Netherlands. The next Olympic medal he won was as a Belgian at the 1998 Winter Olympics on the Men's 5000 Meters.
