Van Galen is known in the Netherlands as "de geniale gek" which could be translated to "the genial madman". He is a stylish and effective attacker, but also notoriously erratic, sometimes behaving violently on the pitch. However, he is an invaluable player for his current club, AZ Alkmaar.
