Barry Joss

Barry Joss, more recently known as B. Tobias Joss, was a candidate in the election for Rector of the University of St Andrews in October 2002. He was widely touted as the "local candidate", given his position as a resident of St Andrews, a recent graduate, former Rector's Assessor to Andrew Neil, and former Treasurer of the Students' Association.

His two opponents were Professor Germaine Greer and Sir Clement Freud, who was in the end victorious. In the campaign, he was to claim that Greer did not in fact want the position, recalling a conversation they had thus: 'We were talking, and she asked me: "Do you really want this job?" I said "Yes, do you?". She replied: "No, but I'd be honoured if the students wanted me."'
