Baron de Clifford

The Barons de Clifford were a notable family in late medieval England, their title dating to 1299. The Barons de Clifford were raised to become Earl of Cumberland in the 16th century, but this title died out in the early 17th century. The title has since passed through several female lines. The Barony passed into the prominent Russell family in the 19th century through the marriage of Sophia, 22nd Baroness de Clifford, to Captain John Russell, a great-grandson of John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford. Consequently, the present holder of the Barony is also in remainder to the Dukedom of Bedford.
