Barbara Taylor Bradford was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire. She grew up in the Leeds suburb of Armley. By the age of twenty she was an editor and columnist on Fleet Street. Her first novel, A Woman of Substance, became an enduring bestseller and was followed by 18 others as well as being made into a TV movie.
