Baratang


 

Baratang (Lat: 12.18º NLong: 93.02º E Region: Area: 238.3 sq. km ) is an island in the Andaman Islands, India. Also known as Baratang island/s, it is the only known mud volcano in India. There are other volcanoes in the area, the Barren Island volcano which is the only active volcano on the Indian subcontinent and the Narcondum volcano which is considered to be a dormant volcano. The island nestled in the Andaman Sea lies 100 Km from Port Blair between South and Middle andamans. It covers an area of 238 sq. km.

The Baratang island last erupted in June 2005. Its eruption has been linked to the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. Its previous eruption was in 18th February 2003.
