Bangs (hair)
Bangs is a hairstyle in which the front part of the hair hangs down in front of the person's forehead. Bangs are far more commonly found on females than on males. However, as long hair becomes more popular among U.S. teens, many boys have begun to grow long bangs as well. The term is usually used only in North American English; other English-speaking countries use the term fringe for the same thing.

The word probably derives from the fact that the hairstyle is created by cutting the hair very suddenly, "like a bang". The expression became popular in the U.S. during the 1870s.
