Back to Basics
This album, released in 1987, was a collection of Billy Bragg's released work up to Feburary 1985; Namely the albums Life's A Riot With Spy Vs. Spy and Brewing Up With Billy Braggand the EP Between The Wars. As a result, it did not contain any new material, but was a document that typified Billy Bragg's "One Man and His Guitar" attitude. This is not to say that the album is 21 similar songs, far from it, it is mostly a diverse commentary on Thatcherite Britain (albeit a highly critical), but it is laced with beautifully poetic love songs and as a result it has been hailed as a cult success since its release eighteen years ago.
