A 9-month old baby of rich parents is kidnapped for ransom. The baby called Bink manages to crawl away from his kidnappers and goes about exploring the city and visiting places he has seen and told about from his picture book also titled Baby's Day Out. His kidnappers follow him but fail to get hold of him.

The three kidnappers are played by Joe Mantegna, Joe Pantoliano, and Brian Haley. Lara Flynn Boyle plays the baby's mother, and Cynthia Nixon the baby's nanny. Others in the cast include Fred Thompson and Eddie Bracken.
