Autonomous University of Madrid
The Autonomous University of Madrid (Spanish: Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, UAM) came into being in 1968 when it had 5 main departments: Science; Political Science; Economics; Law; and Philosophy. These were originally located in different parts of Madrid, until October 25, 1971 when the University was centralised in the Cantoblanco campus and a Psychology department was opened. The physics department was also founded in 1971 by famed Spanish scientist Nicolás Cabrera, who as served as a professor. The university also founded the 1989 The Nicolás Cabrera Institute. It now also has a Medicine department, located outside the campus. There were more than 33,000 students in 2001.
