Australoid

Australoid describes the racial classification (or typology) of humans from Australia but also present in New Guinea and Melanesia. In a more general sense the word Australoid can also be used to include the Negritos of Southeast Asia, the Tamils of southern India, and the Veddahs of Sri Lanka, as well as some populations of East Asia and the Americas.

Mesolithic south-east Asians have been found to be similar to modern and ancient Australians, and it appears that the modern Australoid racial type survived in geographical isolation, while on the mainland early Australoids were assimilated or replaced by Mongoloids.

When they are compared to the other races, Australoids have a deep infraglabellar notch, strong projection of the lower face, and a flat forehead. The Negritoids and the Veddoids of Asia do not tend to display such features. Unlike other robust modern humans, Australoid cranial robustness is not related to the overall size of the skull. They also tend to have narrower skulls than other robust humans.

The Australoid race today does form a genetic group representing the region known as Sahul, a land area that once connected Australia to New Guinea.
