Black and white television began in Australia in 1955, with colour television being introduced generally to the country in 1975, in time for the Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada. Television which is broadcast in Australia contains a wide of range of shows of both local (Australian made) and imported shows from overseas, both on Free-to-air television and pay television (cable television and satellite television).

Over the years, there have been many notable Australian-made television series and programs, including Flying Doctors, a television medical drama series about the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia, which takes medical care to people living in the Outback of Australia, (where neighbours can be thousands of miles apart), other medical dramas, including GP, A Country Practice and All Saints etc., plus police series, including Homocide, Matlock Police, Police Rescue, Blue Heelers, Cop Shop, Water Rats and Stingers.
