Austin County, Texas
Austin County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown Metropolitan Area. As of the U.S. Census 2000, the population is 23,590. Its county seat is Bellville6. The county is named for Stephen F. Austin, who facilitated the Anglo American colonization of Texas and is known as the Father of Texas.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 23,590 people, 8,747 households, and 6,481 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (36/mi²). There are 10,205 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 80.22% White, 10.64% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 6.99% from other races, and 1.58% from two or more races. 16.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,747 households out of which 34.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.60% are married couples living together, 9.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% are non-families. 22.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.14.

The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,615, and the median income for a family is $46,342. Males have a median income of $32,455 versus $22,142 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,140. 12.10% of the population and 8.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.70% of those under the age of 18 and 14.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
