March was born to Pere March, a horseman and poet as well, in Gandia towards the end of 1397. From a very young age he took part in the expeditions that Alfons el Magnanim carried out in the Mediterranean. From the age of twenty-seven, however, he would never leave the region where he was born. First to Gandia, where he directed the administration of his lands and later on to Valencia, where his life was tumultuous and disordered. He married at the age of 40 with Isabel Martorell, the sister of Joanot Martorell, and found himself a widower 2 years later. In 1443 he married again, this time to Joana Escorna who was also destined to die young. Ausiās March died the 3rd of March, 1459 in Valencia. Five bastard children and no legitimate heirs have been attributed to him.
