As with much of the city of Los Angeles east of the river, Atwater Village has traditionally been a working-class Latino neighborhood. However, this began to change in the 1980s: as middle-class Armenian and Filipino immigrants surged into the area, the Los Angeles Police Department managed to crack down on gang activity (in particular, suppressing the notorious Toonerville organization after a major crime spree in the mid-'90s). By the early 2000s, the gentrification of neighboring Silver Lake had drawn many hipsters and working-class gays into Atwater Village, attracted by the area's relatively cheap real estate.
