Born at King Ranch in Texas, his dam was "Igual" and his sire was "Bold Venture" who had won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes in 1936. As a foal, he suffered a serious injury to his hoof that appeared to end any chance of racing. Although unable to walk normally as an adult, he overcame his handicap by wearing a special shoe on the injured hoof.
