Asahi Shimbun (朝日新聞; Asahi Shinbun) is among the big three leading national newspapers in Japan with the others being Yomiuri Shimbun and Mainichi Shimbun. Its circulation, which was 8.27 million for its morning edition; 3.85 million for its evening edition as of April 2004, is second behind that of Yomiuri Shimbun.

On the political spectrum, this paper stands on anti-Americanism and supports centrally planned economies. Before World War II, they supported Prince Fumimaro Konoe who was well-known as an anti-American politician. And since the end of World War II, they have praised Communist states such as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the People's Republic of China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, etc. Capitalism has been the enemy of Asahi since 1930's.

The newpaper has alliances with the International Herald Tribune, which is affiliated with the New York Times. Together, they publish "International Herald Tribune/The Asahi Shimbun" as their English edition, replacing their stand-alone Asahi Evening News. Asahi also has a partnership with the People's Daily ({{zh-cp|c=人民日报|p=Rénmín Ribao}}) which is the official newspaper of the Communist Party of China.
