Arturo Prat


 

Arturo Prat Chacón (April 4, 1848, Hacienda de Puñual near Ninhue - May 21, 1879, Iquique) was a Chilean naval hero of the War of the Pacific.

In the 1860s, in the war against Spain, he took part in several major naval engagements -- including battles at Papudo (1865), a coastal city north of Valparaiso, and at the Battle of Abtao (1866), at the islet of Abtao before Chiloé Island.

During the War of the Pacific, he commanded the Esmeralda in the naval battle of Iquique. He died during the boarding of the Peruvian ironclad Huáscar, and one of the three momuments on its deck is to him.

Prat's name is commemorated on numerous plazas, streets, and other structures in Chile, as well as Chile's scientific research facility Arturo Prat Station in Antarctica. His portrait also appears on the 10,000 Chilean peso bill.
