Arizona State University

Arizona State University (ASU) is one of the largest universities in terms of enrollment in the United States with a main campus student body of over 51,000. Founded in 1885 as a territorial normal school, the institution went through several name and purpose changes before becoming a state university in 1958.

Current State of the University

]ASU is currently aspiring to climb from its current third tier status in the rankings published by U.S. News and World Report. Under the leadership of its 16th president, Michael Crow, several initiatives are being pursued toward this end, the most notable of which is the Arizona Biodesign Institute. Additionally, gifts of $50 million each were given to the College of Engineering, now the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering, and the College of Business, now the W.P. Carey School of Business.

The university was selected to host the third United States Presidential debate on October 13, 2004 at Gammage Auditorium. Edward Prescott of the W.P. Carey School of Business was awarded the 2004 Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel (also known as The Nobel Prize in economics), a first for an ASU faculty member. At the end of the 2004, George Poste, was named Scientist of the Year by R&D Magazine.
