The Archbishopric of Magdeburg was founded in 968 on the request of Otto I, Holy Roman Emperor by Pope John XIII. Its ecclesiastical province included the existing dioceses of Brandenburg and Havelberg and the newly founded dioceses of Merseburg, Zeitz, and Meißen. The new archdiocese was close to the border between the Holy Roman Empire and Slavic tribes, and was meant to promote Christianity among the Slavs.

The Archbishopric became a state of the Holy Roman Empire under Archbishop Wichmann in the middle of the 12th century. It turned Protestant in 1545, and was secularized as the Duchy of Magdeburg by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 and put under the rule of the elector of Brandenburg. During Napoleonic times, the Duchy of Magdeburg became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia. In 1813, it returned to Prussia (the former Brandenburg), and was soon thereafter dissolved and made the main part of the newly-founded Prussian Province of Saxony.
