Arab Maghreb Union

The Arab Maghreb Union is a Pan Arab project aiming at economic and political union in northern Africa, initiated in 1989. Its members are Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania. Very little in the way of actual political and economical coordination has been achieved, however.

Traditional rivalries between Morocco and Algeria and the unsolved question of Western Sahara's sovereignty has blocked union meetings since the early nineties, despite several attempts to re-launch the political process. The latest top-level conference, in mid-2005, was derailed by Moroccan refusal to meet, due to Algerian verbal support for Saharan independence.
