Apologetics
Apologetics is the field of study concerned with the systematic defense of a position. Someone who engages in apologetics is called an apologist or an "apologete".
Intellectual and Social Function of Religious Apologetics
Apologetics serves an intellectual function within religious communities by providing arguments that support the doctrinal and ethical tenets of the faith. These arguments can strengthen the believer's faith, and support the propagation of the faith by offering arguments intended to persuade the uncommitted.
