Anti Revolutionary Party

The Anti-Revolutionaire Partij (ARP, "Anti-revolutionary Party") was a political party in the Netherlands from 1879 until 1980.

The Christian Democratic and Protestant ARP was founded in 1879 by Abraham Kuyper, and as such was the first national political party in the Netherlands. Though the party normally did not have more than ten percent of the votes, its influence was far greater. This can be explained by the political capacities of its most famous leaders Abraham Kuyper, Hendrikus Colijn, Jelle Zijlstra and Barend Biesheuvel, all of whom were prime minister.

In 1974, the ARP formed a federation with two other Christian Democratic parties, the Reformed CHU and the Catholic KVP. In 1980, the three parties merged and formed the CDA.
