Preven began playing classical music at age 5, but gave that up as a teenager. She is a Harvard graduate and began writing songs while a student there. She was the lead singer in the LA bands Ednaswap and Annetenna, the former band name coming to her in a dream, but is best known for her songwriting. With songwriting partner Scott Cutler, she wrote the Natalie Imbruglia hit "Torn", "Sactuary" for Madonna, and wrote and produced Sinéad O'Connor's "No Man's Woman" and "The State I am In".
