Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia

Annapolis Royal (2004 pop.: 548) is a Canadian town located in the western part of Annapolis County, Nova Scotia.

Economy

Since the reconstruction of the Port Royal Habitation in 1934 and subsequent designation of Fort Anne as a National Historic Site, the community's economy has become heavily dependent upon tourism. The community is compact with many historic buildings and tall mature trees. An added benefit is the scenery of the surrounding countryside which makes it a favourite summer and fall destination, with the community being surrounded by apple orchards; during the month of May, numerous blossoming orchards make a beautiful sight. The fruit, which is excellent in quality, is the principal export of the region. Nova Scotia's largest amusement park, Upper Clements Park, was built several kilometres west of the town in nearby Clementsport.

The town, along with most of Annapolis and Digby counties, experienced a severe economic decline during the mid-1990s after a nearby military training base, CFB Cornwallis, was closed as a result of defence budget cuts. The former base located in Deep Brook is now the site of an international peacekeeping training centre, however employment levels are far below what it once was.
