Angelo Cardinal Sodano


 

Angelo Cardinal Sodano (born 23 November 1927) is the Cardinal Secretary of State, first appointed by Pope John Paul II and then reappointed by Pope Benedict XVI. In April 2005 he succeeded Benedict as Dean of the College of Cardinals. He became Pro-Secretary 1 December 1990, and full Secretary of State once he had been named a cardinal in the consistory of June 28, 1991. He is the first person to serve simultaneously as Dean and Secretary of State since 1828.
