The main character of Angelic Layer is Misaki Suzuhara (鈴原みさき Suzuhara Misaki), a seventh grader who just moved in with her aunt, Shouko Asami (浅見 祥子 Asami Shōko) in Tokyo. While in Tokyo she learns of an amazingly popular toy/game called Angelic Layer, where people buy and custom-design dolls known as Angels, and then can control their every movement mentally on a field called a "layer."

The manga series is set a few years before Chobits, another CLAMP work occurring in the same universe as Angelic Layer. In the anime, no references between Chobits and Angelic Layer are known, however a character from the latter series is feautured in the former. In addition, Misaki's angel, Hikaru, is visually based on its namesake from an earlier Clamp series, Hikaru Shidou of Magic Knight Rayearth.
