Angel

An angel is an ethereal creature (meaning it is "of the air"), found in many mythologies, whose duties are to assist and serve God or the gods of many religious traditions.

Angels in Fiction

A number of angels appear in fictional works both as helpers and advisors to the protaganist or, more recently, as protaganists themselves. These include:

  • Raphael in the novels Damiano, Damiano's Lute, and Raphael by R.A. MacAvoy.
  • The planetary spirits in C.S. Lewis' novels Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength are meant to be angels.
  • The main characters on the television series Touched by an Angel.
  • Jonathan, the protaganist of the television series Highway to Heaven, played by Michael Landon.
  • The novels Angel Fire, and Angel Light by Andrew Greeley prominantly feature angel characters.
  • Babrael is an angel character in the novel Bring me the Head of Prince Charming by Roger Zelazny and Robert Sheckley.
  • Aziraphale is an angel character in the novel Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.
  • Tyrael is an angel character in the video game Diablo II.
  • In contemporary fiction angels often lose much of their traditional character. They may be cruel, confused, or even express doubts about the nature or existence of God.

The name is also frequently used, often without an angelic link or even ironically (intended?) in the dark camp; thus the title part in the Tv series "Angel" (a spin off of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") is a vampire -full name Angelicus- who got a soul, and thus a good hart and eternal remorse driving him to fight evil, while retaining the vampire physiology
